Jackson is the capital of Mississippi and is located in the central part of the State.  The Jackson metropolitan area consists of Hinds, Madison, and Rankin Counties and has a population of 440,000.  Known as the “Crossroad of the South” because of its geographic location, Jackson is only 3 ½ hours from Memphis, 3 hours from New Orleans, 5 ½ hours from Atlanta, and 6 hours from Dallas.  Primarily known for its southern hospitality and relaxed lifestyle, Jackson offers all of the amenities of a large city without the congestion or faster pace.  In 1997, it was ranked by Reader’s Digest as 20th in its 301 Best Places to Raise a Family in America poll.  In 1998, Money magazine ranked Metro Jackson as 19th in the South for Best Places to Live in America.  With its year round mild climate and the presence of a 33,000 acre reservoir, outdoor recreational activities and sporting events abound.  Cultural events are also plentiful including Broadway productions, symphony, opera, and international art exhibits.  Its strong economic growth has allowed Jackson to attract Nissan which plans to open a $1 billion dollar manufacturing facility in the spring of 2003. The absence of HMOs coupled with a reasonable cost of living makes Mississippi a very attractive place to live and practice medicine.
